About Matt Consul
Guest Violist, PSQ II: Beethoven 250 Anniversary Concert
Matt Consul holds a Bachelor’s degree in Viola Performance and a Master’s in Contemporary Improvisation on mandolin and violin from Boston’s New England Conservatory of Music. He is a member of the Portland Symphony Orchestra, the Cape Symphony, and the Washington Heights Chamber Orchestra. He also performs regularly with the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra and as principal viola of the New Orchestra of Washington. Matt was formerly the principal violist of Boston’s highly-acclaimed (but, sadly, now defunct) chamber orchestra Discovery Ensemble. An ardent chamber musician, Matt has performed in Hyderabad, India as a part of the SOTA festival and has attended festivals such as The Taos School of Music and Kneisel Hall. He has also regularly performed chamber music around New York City and Boston through Groupmuse, a social network that brings communities together through chamber music house parties. Matt was a co-founder/director of For The Love Of Music, an educational initiative that provided free interactive performances and workshops for children in uptown Manhattan. Active in a variety of musical circles outside the classical world, Matt is a member of jazz composer/bandleader Miho Hazama’s Grammy-nominated ensemble m_unit. He was also formerly a member of the alternative folk outfit the Laura Grill Band and has toured with The Dear Hunter. Matt is absolutely thrilled and honored to be joining the Portland String Quartet for this performance!
